Alone
by Maya Angelou
Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires
With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
'Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

The poem “Alone” by Maya Angelou is discussing the fact of you cannot make it out of here alone. That means that you cannot leave without your soulmate being there with you. People are suffering in the world that have no family or anyone that can be there for them so they dislike their lives. The author is also saying that all the people that have someone there to love them are making their lives fulfilling and having happiness and joy in their lives.

This poem talks about the hardships of people in tody’s world and the loss of happiness. The poem states that no one can make it on their own meaning that nobody in today’s world can live without help. The poem also talks about milionares who’s wealth does not make them happy. The poem states that the race of man is changing meaning that people today live hard and can not live without help.

The poem “Alone” by Maya leaves a very important message. It leaves a person thinking about how no one can survive in this world all alone, that we all might have a home for our body, but sometimes our soul is homeless. I interpreted this from the third line in the first stanza, “How to find my soul a home.” The alliteration is also there with the word, “Alone, all alone.” The rhyme scheme of the first stanza is A,B,C,D,C,E,F,G,G,C. The simile is also there: “…wives run round like banshees.” I think the symbolism also lies in the line “hearts of stone.”

Wow a really nice poem by Maya Angelou. Well this basis of this poem was to establish the fact that there is no true “loner” in the world everybody needs somebody and nobody is ever completely lonely. I enjoyed the third stanza which said “There are some millionares with money they can’t use. This is humerous because it supports the idea that money can’t buy happiness. To tell the truth I cannot realy identify a rhyme scheme here. Buth there are many other literary elements such as personification e.g “to find my soul a home” souls cannot live in a physical house/home, another example of personification is the moan of man’s suffering. The only rhyme scheme i am able to identify is the repeat of the verses “nobody but nobody can make it out here alone” This was an interesting poem.

I think the poem “Alone” means that you can’t live your life alone. You need at least one person to be supportive of you and to be there when you need them. You need you family and friends to be in your life. It means that you can’t live your life without expressing yourself, you can’t keep all your feelings and emotions inside because it will get to the point where you will be trap in them and they will drive you insane. The poem “Alone” has a personification in line 3 “How to find my soul a home” your soul can’t have a home. Also in line 4 “water is not thirsty” water can’t be thirsty.

    Assignment for Break.
    Alone. By:Maya Angelou

This poem, “Alone,” explains our world, which is really cruel, expensive and harsh. Maya Angelou wrote, “There are some millionaires with money they cannot use.” This lines means that there are many rich, greedy people in this world who don’t want to spend their money on things they think are useful, but expensive, but they have the money to buy it. There are people who are cruel by not caring about others and/or their own family. It show the dark side of them like the line, “Storm clouds are gathering.” This line shows the dark side of sdomeon because, when clouds gather, they are really dark and then start to rain. I have found 1 example of personmification in this poem. It is, “Where water is not thirsty.” It is an example of personification because it has human qualities (thirsty) compared to non-livng things (water). There is also 1 example of a metaphor which is,” Th cure their hearts of stone.” It is a metaphor because it is a comparision without using like or as and it is a direct relationship where 1 thing substitutes the other. There aren’t any alliteration or assonance in this poem. This poem describes life

in the peom “alone”, it states that life is unfair and that one is really all alone in the world. she says”where water is not thirsty” and that is a personification because water cannot be thirsty unless the lake, river, or ocean is dried up. she describes the horrible features of the human world such as greed and famine. i think that she is saying that the world will soon come to an end and because of our current state, there’s nothing we can do about it.

  • 8    Ellen // Feb 22, 2007 at 6:35 pm

The overall meaning of this poem is that no one can make it through life all alone. Its saying you need people like friends, and family. Also its saying it doesnt matter if your rich or how much money you have if your all alone then your not happy, becasue money wont make you happy if you all by yourself. An example of a symilie I foudn was the part where it says “Their wives run around like banshees”. And an example of a metaphor is “To cure their hearts of stone”. So the meaning of this poem is that nobody wants to be alone.

In the poem “Alone” by Maya Angelou it tells you that that nobody can live life alone and that living life alone is very difficult because in the world everybody needs somebody to live life with. You need your family or friends to support you and living life alone would be very difficult because no one would be there for you. The personifications in the poem were “How to find my soul a home”, and “water is not thirsty”. Your soul can’t find a home and water cant become thirsty. The alliteration of the poem is, “Alone, all alone.”

  • 10    Jessica Gonzalez // Feb 23, 2007 at 8:13 pm

The basic meaning of this poem to me is that some people cannot do things on their own, they think that in order to accomplish something you need to know someone to get ahead. It may be true that some people that are rich can become selfish thinking that possessions are all they need. The poem is also about loneliness because she keeps repeating the line “alone” but I think the basic meaning of the poem is that everyone needs someone by their side, someone who will be by their because they care about the person not becasue the person is rich. In the poem she has a simile the line when she says “Their wives run round like banshees” when she uses this simile she talks about the fact that the wives run around like their untouchable doing whatever they want with her husbands money, showing that she does not really care for her husband but cares about the money.

The poem “Alone” is saying that you can’t live your whole life being alone and lonely. You need some family, and maybe even friends to help you along the way to help you and be there for you when you need someone to talk to or just even hang out with. This poem has personification in line 4 “water is not thirsty,” and water cannot be thirsty.

I think the poem “Alone” means that you can’t live your life alone. You need at least one person to be support you in times of need no matter how strong you are . You need your family and friends to help you in times of need. If you keep everything inside you it will build up so much you will be living hell in life.Life is very hard but not having anyone to help you out is harded to live with you need someone to care for you and love you and you need to do the same. The poem “Alone” has personification in line 3 “How to find my soul a home” you soul literally cant have a home because its not something you can see. In line 4 “water is not thirsty” water doesnt have any feelings or sence of life it just is as it is.

In the poem ” Alone,” Maya Angelou expresses that nobody can make it alone. It is hard to live alone or be lonely for a long time. In stanza three she states “There are some millionaires, With money they can’t use, Their wives run round like banshees, Their children sing the blues, They’ve got expensive doctors, To cure their hearts of stone.” She means that not even money can not cure loneliness. Even the richest people who have all the money they need and want can not live alone for a long time. I think she probably would agree that money does not replace the company of someone you love.

  • 14    Elise Park // Feb 24, 2007 at 2:22 pm

I think that his poem “Alone” is trying to say that some people are lucky and they don’t appreciate it. Some people has something special and they don’t use it properly. Some people don’t have the things that others do, such as specialized doctors, money, etc. The title of this poem might be “Alone” because without people and friends with you, it will be hard to be successful and also all by ourselves, being greedy. It won’t happen, we couldn’t be successful without thanking anybody or without other’s help. We get help from others we teach others, etc. Maya Angelou might’ve wrote this poem because now – a – days, everybody is being successful and we should appreciate how we became successful.

In this poem … the author is trying to explain that you can not make it out on the world alone. He uses money to show that even money can not buy everything you need people around you and someone to be there for you becuase NOBODY can manage everything on there own .This poem uses personification when it gives life to bread when it says “bread loaf is not stone” and it also brings life to an unliving thing when it says “water is not thirsty”. This poem gives hope to people if you understand what its saying. It says to always be with someone in the world becuase when your alone most times it dosent work out annd you cant by things with money and stuff like that. In the last paragrpah its trying to to explain that people should do something about being alone becuase it isnt working out for people and the human race is suffering becuase of this.

THe Poem “Alone” by Maya Angelou is a really nice poem, discussing that nobody in this world can leave it ALONE. People always need a soulmate to fullfill there lives and that they can end there lives happily. It also says that millionares try to fullfill there lives by having a lot of money, but really you can’t leave this world with money and you can’t leave it alone. This poem is more like a free poem which doesn’t really contain any rhyme scheme. The personification in this poem is “Water is not Thirsty” this is a good example of personification because water can’t be thirsty. Another Example of personification is shown in the 1st stanza “How to find my soul a home” , a person soul can’t have a home.

In this poem “alone” the author is trying to make a certain point. The author is trying to say that nobody can go through life without some help from someone. For exampls, when it explains that the millionares wtih money need help too. They do evertone in life needs someone to help them in life. The millionares can not be happy with just the money that they have, they need something else. They need a loving, caring person to help them out in life. There is a simile in this poem “wives run round like banshees”. This is a simile becaue it is comparing wives to banshees using “like”.

The poem “Alone” is describing that eveyone needs somebody else. Weather theyare rich or poor they cannot be happy alone. They need somebody besides them. Someone to share their joy or misery with them. Someone there in the good or the bad. An example of personification is “Where water is not thirsty.” An example of a similie is “Their wives run round like banshees.”
This poem “Alone” describes that nobody can live alone.

This poem is talking about being alone. When we are isolated, we cannot survive- we need other people, we need to socialize, and make friends. Even millionaires, who got all the money in the world, who is able to have anything they want need people. Money is nothing compared to friends and family. Ever heard of the phase “Money doesn’t buy happyness”? Well that is true- you could be rich but with no one, your nothing. Together we can team up and then we will survive. Metaphors are “Storm clouds are gathering, The wind is gonna blow, The race of man is suffering, And I can hear the moan, ‘Cause nobody, But nobody, Can make it out here alone.” That means that without people, disaster could happen. That is also a symbolism because it symbolizes chaos. Being by ourselves could lead to instability because we need help.

The poem “Alone” means that you shouldn~t be alone i can~t say can~t because a good amount of people do live by themselves. You should have someone to be there like a roommate or visiters. You should have a little bit of friends or family to help when you in need. It means that you shouldn~t live your life without expressing yourself sometimes you shouldn~t keep all your feelings and emotions inside because it will get to the point where you will be taking your angry on others. The poem Alone has a personification in line 3.

Wow, that poem was really nice. I loved that poem! .. I think this poem is telling someone that no matter how much you have, or how much of a easy life you live that nobody can make it in his world without someone. Whether it was a parent or it was a friend or confidant. I think that it means that everyone needs somebody and you cant just continue life without having someone in it. Being anti-social can’t get you a job, therefore, you can’t get money. Overall, I really liked how she used similes and personification in tis poem. It’s going down on my top favorite poems. =]

The message of this poem is saying that everyone needs somebody in there life. No one can be comfortable with alone. Maya Angelou is also trying to explain that this world is too rough and for anybody to cope with it all by themself. Everyone needs support no matter how brave people may think they are. This poem also uses similes and metaphors, examples are “wives run round like banshees” and “heart of stone”. The rhyme scheme in this poem is A,B,C,D,C,E,F,G,G,C.

The poem “Alone” by Maya Angelou is saying that everybody needs somebody by their side to make it through whatever. Nobody can make it through things without people such as their friends and family. She also says that some people might have everything they want and need but they can’t whatsoever live through life alone. They need somebody else to have excitement and happiness in their life. Lonliness can’t succeed in having those two things. “Where water is not thirsty” and “To cure their hearts of stone” are examples of personification. “Storm clouds are gathering” is also an example of personification.”Their wives run round like banshees” is an example of simile. The rhyme scheme is A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,H,E.

  • 24    Tyquithia C // Feb 26, 2007 at 11:23 pm

This poem, “Alone,” is basically telling me that no one except no one can make it on this earth or anywhere else alone. Even though it may look as if a person has almost everything they need or want, they are still suffering because they have no one to be there for them. The most poor of people might be better off than than some of us today because they have someone that actually cares for them and they are not alone. She says, “They have expensive doctors to cure their hearts of stone, but nobody can make it out here alone,” to show that one person that gives another the strength they need is better than any doctor that can cure any disease because they are giving support, not a cover up.

I think this poem means that you cannot live your life alone. You need at least one person to be supportive of you and your dreams and also to be there when you need them. You need you family and friends to be in your life. It means that you can’t live your life without expressing yourself to people you cannot keep all your feelings and emotions bottled up because it will get to the point where you will be trap yp in you and they will drive you insane.
